“The images for this “white-on-white” series–white buildings in snow, usually–just keeping appearing as I go along.  This one is of the ell off my neighbor’s barn that I have painted numerous times, probably because I walk by it everyday, and so see it in so many different lights and weather conditions.  This particular angle had never caught my attention (in 22 years!).  I first noticed it at an even sharper angle where you couldn’t even see the window panes, just the indentations of the door and window opening which showed up as just a slightly different shade of white.  It was so simple, yet described so much.  It was the essence of this white-on-white concept.  I also loved how the two different roof lines formed a ‘v’ that pointed toward the focal point, making it a strong composition.  In the end, I decided to show a little of the window panes to draw the eye back to the center, otherwise the darker tone of the foundation stones would have pulled the eye away from where I wanted the focus to be.  This is one of the simplest in this series, but also one of the strongest–capturing the essence of these wonderful New England clapboard buildings.” -Peter Ferber
