This is another image inspired by the cottage in “Sailing into View” in this show. I loved the stark simplicity of this corner–kind of the essence of a cottage in a window, a railing and a rocker. I’m also intrigued by how these calm little porches are on the front line facing the weather 365 days a year, decade after decade. I wanted to create an image that contrasted the relative fragility of this structure with the vast view it is perched on the edge of. So, this is a created image not a literal scene. I used a wide view of The Broads as a way of creating that feeling, though it wouldn’t surprise me if there wasn’t a similar sort of cottage on this shore at some point! This vista ranges from the entrance to Roberts Cove on the left to the far end of Rattlesnake Island, with the Belknap Range in the middle. By contrast I’m also interested in the smallest things here–the hooks that you find on porches and rock ledges, and wonder what purpose they originally served. – Peter Ferber
