“I set off well-equipped to capture all of Greece in sketches. And I would have, if my schedule were my own. I also probably never would have gotten past the first island; there was so much to get my attention. So I worked when I could. It was good to work quickly, without caring what the result was. And I was quite happy with how these latent skills came through and allowed me to put down in a few minutes what I might labor for hours in the studio to do–and then not with the same spirit and spontaneity. I was able to sit down and start in with pen or brush–no-carefully-worked-out pencil lines to follow–and come up with something. The freest time for me turned out to be in the evening; so many of the ink sketches were done under a street lamp on one of those unattached chairs. Now that I’ve been introduced, I’d love to return at my own pace and explore more of the possibilities that came and passed by so quickly.” -Peter Ferber
