“I came across a delightful 1800’s English watercolor that had such rich but airy colors to it that I wanted to try the same approach.  I immediately thought of some pictures I had from my college painting trip there that were the perfect subject.  We stayed at a little hotel in St. Ives, Cornwall called the Garrack.  There weren’t enough rooms for us all in the main building, so a few of us were put up in this little cottage out back.  It was not properly heated for off-season use, so we froze on some of those cold October days, but otherwise it was idyllic.  I began with a line drawing.  Then built up layers of light washes.  I particularly like the stucco walls and roof where four or five hues blend to create a livelier look than a single grey wash would.  When I Googled the hotel name, I found it was still in operation, and there was the cottage, looking very much the same.” – Peter Ferber
