“I discovered this spot while poking around out on Beach Pond Road beyond the Wolfeboro dump–err… “transfer station”!  I don’t know if the land has been cleared in recent years, but I don’t remember ever seeing this great vista out to Mount Shaw.  I’m sure it will look wonderful in all seasons, but I started with winter.  I was never able to get there when the light was just right.  So, the lighting effect is what I imagined it might be.  I probably stretched it a bit by adding the light on the foreground maple, but it needed that warmth there, rather than a dark silhouette.  The mountain just jumps out at you when you’re standing there, but when I drew it out to actual scale, it looked very small.  The size that matched the impression it gave me was two or three times that.  I masked out the snow on the tree branches and mountaintops, so I could paint the sky continuously behind them.  In the end, I also added some opaque touches with gouache to bring out some of the finer detail.  Though the place was not plowed out at all this winter, I turned the lights on to give this snowy subject another touch of warmth.” – Peter Ferber
