This piece began as a demonstration here at The Art Place last September. You can see where I left off in the photo displayed here. This will be a reminder to those who were there that evening. It’s come a long way! (But I swear it is the same painting.) Looking
around the grounds of this little cottage, this was the view that caught my attention–not the view out to the water, or the view of the whole house. It’s a fun way to capture both the porch and the view together. The major over all change I made when I got the demo back in the studio, was to really deepen the color in the windows. What had really struck me was the contrast between the light tones of the house wall and furniture and the darkness of the reflected image. I also found I was a bit enthusiastic with the yellow in the table covering, so I washed that color out quite a bit and added some transparent layers to cut the intensity. Then of course there were the many details in the pattern of it to be filled in. (That alone took me a couple of days to sort out.) I bit off a lot more than I could accomplish in a three hour demo, so I’m glad I could keep going, and bring this modest little scene to life. – Peter Ferber
